VW ID.7 in the ADAC test: Electric sedan achieves sensational grade

For the first time, a car has received the grade "very good" in the ADAC test - the honor goes to an electric car

Never before has a car received the rating "very good", i.e. the highest grade, in the ADAC car test. This first achievement has now been achieved by an electric car.

Every year, the German transport club ADAC puts around 100 cars through their paces. Now the first "very good" car is in the test: the VW ID.7 Pro with an overall grade of 1.5 (verdict: "very good"). So far, three cars with an overall rating of 1.6 ("good") have been in the top spots: BMW iX xDrive50 (tested in April 2022), Mercedes EQS 450+ Electric Art (February 2022) and the Skoda Enyaq 85x L&K (March 2024).

With a base price of 56,995 euros, the VW ID.7 Pro tested is priced well below the long-standing frontrunners from BMW and Mercedes (more than 100,000 euros) and roughly on par with the Skoda.

This is how the ADAC tests

Criteria such as market relevance, innovations and technology mix play a decisive role in the ADAC car test. Energy-efficient engines and popular variants are important when selecting vehicles. Over 350 individual points are checked and evaluated in a standardized manner with grades from 0.6 (best grade) to 5.5 (worst grade). The overall score of a vehicle is calculated from the ratings of the main criteria engine/drive, comfort, driving characteristics, interior and trunk, with the points environment and safety being weighted most heavily. The separately assessed car costs are not included in the overall score. Since 2016, the assessment has been independent of the vehicle class, which means that cars from different classes can also be easily compared with each other.

This is how the ID.7 was rated

The ID.7 received a one before the decimal point in the categories engine/drive (1.0), safety (1.1), environment/ecotest (1.2) and comfort (1.5). The test engineers particularly praised the high energy efficiency of the ID.7. With a consumption of 18.1 kWh per 100 kilometers, the sedan is one of the most economical models in the mid-range.

Two before the decimal point was given for the other main categories driving characteristics (2.1), body/trunk (2.3) and interior (2.4). Because the cost of the car (grade 3.4) is not included in the overall grade, the bottom line is a very good result - and thanks to very good technical properties, a good price-performance ratio, summarizes the ADAC. "Since 2016, the assessment has been carried out independently of the vehicle class, which means that cars from different classes can also be easily compared with each other," writes the ADAC.

The ID.7 also achieved a top score of five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test. The electric car was particularly impressive in terms of adult occupant protection, with a score of 95 percent.
