The Viamala - natural enjoyment of the Roman part of the viaSpluga

Visit the Viamala Gorge and experience this impressive monument up close. A worthwhile excursion destination even in bad weather!

Carved into the solid rock thousands of years ago by the glacier ice and the water of the Hinterrhein, living traces of a fascinating history can still be discovered in the Viamala Gorge today.

Steep rock faces, millennia-old whirlpools, mystical water colors - the impressive world of the Viamala Gorge will amaze you.

The path through the narrow Viamala Gorge was already used in Roman times to access the Alpine passes Splügen and St. Bernardino. The steep rock faces, up to 300 meters high, the roaring waters of the Hinterrhein, the threat of rockfalls in the narrow gorge have made this section of the former trade route between Graubünden and Ticino particularly dangerous. It is not for nothing that the gorge was given the name "via mala" ("bad path" in Romanesque).

But it is precisely this "tremendous grandeur of the Via Mala", as Friedrich Nietzsche describes the gorge, that makes the natural monument so impressive and irresistible for all who appreciate the rugged beauty of nature.

In 1903, the Viamala Gorge was opened up via a visitor center and steps leading deep down. A few years later, an adventure tunnel was built, which leads to a visitor platform with a great view.
