Basel – a Swiss city full of exciting contrasts

In Basel, you'll encounter art literally at every turn, whether strolling through the beautiful old town or visiting one of the nearly 40 museums. Some of them enjoy worldwide renown and, thanks to their thematic diversity, offer something for every taste. Added to this are the countless galleries spread throughout the city.

The love of art was already firmly rooted in the Rhine city in 1967, the year of the Picasso miracle, and recently culminated in the monumental new building of the Kunstmuseum Basel. The Kunstmuseum Basel, whose history dates back to 1661, is one of the world's first museums. Its collection includes numerous major works of art from the last 700 years. Wandering through the halls, you'll discover a "who's who" of classical modernism, from Pablo Picasso to Henri Matisse and Joan Miró to Paul Klee. No wonder, then, that London's "The Times" ranked the museum the fifth best in the world in 2013.

The art world meets in Basel
Art Basel is a meeting place for artists, art collectors, and many prominent figures from the cultural scene. The high-profile exhibitions showcase various art forms, including works by modern masters as well as emerging talents. Art Basel brings the art world to life – and that's why it's so successful.

Basel is as famous for its historic buildings in the Old Town as it is for its modern architectural highlights. The many works of art in public spaces are also worth seeing.
