Furka and Simplon benefit

Federal Council approves financial aid for car transport

The federal government intends to provide financial support for car transport in Switzerland in the future through a joint guarantee. The Federal Council supports a corresponding parliamentary initiative by the National Council's Transport Committee. Two out of four car transport companies currently benefit from this.

Railway cars are expensive. The federal government is therefore supporting regional railways in the procurement of new cars through a guarantee. This guarantee is to be extended to car transport companies. The Federal Council supports a parliamentary initiative by the National Council's Transport Committee. Parliament must now decide on the matter.

When the federal government acts as a guarantor for a loan, interest rates for railway operators are lower. At the same time, the federal government has to subsidize the railways less, which eases the burden on the federal budget. However, only car transport companies that, firstly, offer services commissioned and paid for by the federal government and, secondly, do not cover their costs can benefit from this so-called joint guarantee.

There are currently four car transport companies in Switzerland. This means that the Veraina and Lötschberg pass cover their costs. The Simplon is currently still financed by the Canton of Valais, but the federal government is expected to contribute to the costs starting next year. Accordingly, the Simplon and Furka passes would benefit from the new regulation if they want to purchase new carriages.
