The Matterhorn – wonder, hiking and mountaineering

The Matterhorn and Switzerland are inextricably linked. The pyramid-shaped mountain giant, which is very difficult to climb, is considered the most photographed mountain in the world. Opposite it is the Klein-Matterhorn, which is accessible by a cable car.
Matterhorn (4,478 m above sea level) – Switzerland’s landmark at a glance

In 1865, the first ascent of the Matterhorn changed what had previously been a very remote region forever. The Matterhorn became world-famous and a destination for ambitious mountaineers.

Even today, climbing the Matterhorn is challenging and can only be achieved by experienced mountaineers with good equipment and a competent guide. At the foot of the most popular route is the Hörnlihütte, at 3260 meters, which was completely rebuilt in 2015.

You have a fantastic view of the most photographed mountain in the world from the Klein Matterhorn (Matterhorn glacier paradise), which is only separated from the Matterhorn by the Theodul Pass and glacier. It is accessible from Zermatt by cable car; the mountain station at 3,820 meters above sea level is the highest cable car station in the Alps.

Other viewpoints include the Gornergrat or the Rothorn. The first electric rack railway in Switzerland reaches the Gornergrat in around 30 minutes from Zermatt. The viewing platform is open all year round.
