Mountain farming used to be the main source of income for the residents in the valley. Unfortunately, the number of farms is decreasing from year to year. Farmers are very important for our community, otherwise the care of nature, which is important for tourism, can no longer be guaranteed in the long term.
Today our community lives mainly from tourism. The intact landscape with the wonderful hiking area in the summer months and the no less great ski area in the winter are our strengths. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, the Staubbach and the Trümmelbach Falls are unique in the world. Our cable cars to the Jungfraujoch “Top of Europe 3,454 m above sea level”, the Schilthorn with its revolving restaurant “Piz Gloria” and “Bond World 007”, the Allmendhubelbahn, Lauterbrunnen-Mürren mountain railway, Isenfluh-Sulwald cable car and the Männlichenbahn attract masses of tourists from all over the world.
Our tourism organizations always strive to present the guests with the advantages of our uniqueness. Hotels and restaurants offer every guest an offer tailored to their needs. The four campsites in the valley floor with their excellent infrastructure skilfully round off the offering for individual and group tourism. The many foreign chalet and second home owners have also become an integral part of our community.
For several years you have been meeting base jumpers in Lauterbrunnen with an estimated 20,000 jumps per year. This sport is often highly controversial due to deaths. To rescue jumpers and alpinists who have had accidents, our team of doctors and mountain guides from the community and the Air Glaciers have set up a well-functioning rescue network.
