The name of the lake has its origins in the historic four “Waldstätten” that surround Lake Lucerne. These are the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden and Lucerne. The oath sworn on the Rütli meadow on Lake Lucerne in 1291 laid the foundation stone for the Swiss Confederation. The lake was long the most important transportation axis in the region. Until 1863, it was the only trade link to the Gotthard Pass.
