The charging network for electric cars is growing rapidly

With the increasing number of electric vehicles in Switzerland, the charging infrastructure is becoming the key to the success of the mobility transition.

Energie 360° and Coop are responding to this and plan to install charging stations at 200 locations by 2026 so that electric vehicles can be used even more easily in everyday life.

By September 2023, 237,000 electric vehicles were registered in Switzerland. A study by the Federal Office of Energy (BFE) predicts an increase to 2.8 million by 2034. This growth requires a massive expansion of the charging infrastructure, as the attractiveness of electric vehicles depends heavily on a simple and user-friendly charging experience.

Sustainable mobility solutions like those from Energie 360° are therefore more in demand than ever. Together with partners like Coop, the charging infrastructure is being continuously expanded throughout Switzerland. According to Mark Schweizer, Head of Energy Management at Coop, the partnership with Energie 360° is being expanded in a targeted manner in order to densify the charging network and respond to the different needs of customers. Since 2020, over 140 Coop locations have been equipped with more than 250 charging points. By 2026, over 200 locations with charging stations are expected to be available, including more than 150 fast charging stations with an output of 50 to 200 kW.

New fast charging stations strengthen the charging network
There are already new fast charging stations at the Coop in Bachenbülach, Feuerthalen, Kaiseraugst and Neuchâtel as well as the Grüzemarkt in Winterthur, Gallusmarkt in St. Gallen and the Jura Center in Bassecourt. This means that the charging infrastructure in Switzerland is constantly improving.

The planned fast charging stations offer outputs of 50 to 200 kW, with the electricity coming entirely from renewable sources. The price is 55 cents per kilowatt hour at the fast charging stations and 29 cents at the 22 kW AC charging stations. Paying is easy via charging card, app, credit card or Twint. Depending on the vehicle type, the battery is full in 30 to 60 minutes. All charging stations are integrated into the Swisscharge network, which includes over 400,000 charging points across Europe.

The expansion of the public charging infrastructure is crucial for the success of electromobility. A study by the “Swiss Mobility Monitor 2023” from the University of Lucerne shows that the charging infrastructure is more important for many drivers than the price or range of the vehicle. By densifying the charging network, as promoted by Energie 360° and Coop, the switch to electromobility is made much easier and promoted.
